Секция III 38 Ex Oriente Lux We often wonder what kind of country China could have been if the victory in Chinese Civil War had been achieved not by the communists of Mao Zedong but by their opponents — supporters of the Chinese Kuomintang Party and its leader Chiang Kai-shek. The biography of Soong Mei-ling, who was the wife of Chiang Kai-shek, can partly provide an answer to this question. Soong Mei-ling and her husband for more than 20 years determined the development of China and subse- quently initiated the foundation of a new state on the island of Taiwan. Chiang Kai- shek did not speak a word in English, therefore, Soong Mei-ling was his interpreter. She was also his advisor in all the matters and the main mediator in the foreign policy affairs. Madame Chiang Kai-shek, who was educated in the USA, smoothed over some issues in political relationships of both Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek himself and his government with western countries. In the view of American intelligentsia this couple became the main driving force of the modernization of China. Chiang Kai- shek and Soong Mei-ling launched the New Life Movement in order to fight with moral decadence and to start moral renewal in China. Such issues as «gender equal- ity», «equality of rights» and «women’s liberation» started to be widely discussed in Chinese society. These ideas stimulated Chinese women to fight for their rights. Известнейшей фигурой данного периода является дочь императрицы У Цзэтянь — принцесса Тайпин. Образ принцессы фигурирует и в современной китайской массовой культу- ре: по мотивам ее биографии издается художественная литература, снимаются кинокартины. С юности Тайпин привлекали к решению государственных дел. Ей припи- сывают организацию двух известных заговоров, которые оказали положитель- ное влияние на дальнейшую судьбу правящего дома. За оказанную помощь двору она получила титул «Оберегающая престол принцесса Великого мира». Будучи любимицей семьи, верной помощницей братьев, Тайпин получала мно- гочисленные владения в знак признания. Общее число дворов, входивших в ее распоряжение, достигало 10 тысяч. Это сделало Тайпин самой богатой прин- цессой танской эпохи.
