The 2016 coup attempt is important to analyze, since historically in Turkey, military coups were usually successful and led to a change of power. However, in 2016 the withdrawal of the ruling authorities and the coming power of the military junta did not follow. Therefore, the study of the Turkish case of the failure of the military coup in 2016 will be useful and significant, primarily in terms of finding reasons of this sit- uation, as well as for countries, which have faced military interference in politics. Our purpose is to find the reasons for the failure of the 2016 military coup attempt in Turkey. Our hypothesis is that the coup attempt failed because it was undertaken by a very small fraction within the military and did not have popular support. During this work it has been studied different theoretical works devoted to military coups, as well as the key characteristics and factors that lead to military coups. In addition, we identified features and characteristics of successful military coups in Turkey between 1960 and 1997. In the third practical part of the work was to identify the causes of the failure of the military coup in 2016 using the following methods: 1. Comparative analysis of the two successful coups and the coup attempt in 2016. 2. Analysis of the system- atizing expert interviews. Thus, our hypothesis was confirmed to a greater extent through a comparative analysis, the analysis of the expert interviews confirmed the hypothesis partly. The identification of the causes of the failure of the military coup in Turkey and a comprehensive analysis of the topic shows that in Turkey the army’s role reduced, as well as «the era of military coups» ends.
